Tree Branch Teepee

Today my husband had to cut down a tree. I am normally not a fan of cutting down trees, but this one was pressing in against the roof and no amount of trimming it back seemed to help. The tree had to go. So this morning my husband went out with the chain saw and cut it down. The children were amazed. They watched him out the window and Birdy proudly exclaimed, "I didn't know he could do that! He's amazing!"

Once the tree was down he began cutting all the branches in to smaller pieces and bundling them together. I began looking out the window and scheming. I do love branches! And these were so wonderful.

After he finished his work, he showered and left. Birdy and I ran in to the back yard and began to figure out what we could do with all the wonderful branches. This is what we came up with.

 here is another view

When I was a little girl one of my best friends and I spent afternoon after afternoon building forts out of branches and what ever else we could find, so this really brought back so memories.

We started by taking about 3 or 4 large ones and resting them against each other. Then we leaned smaller ones against the bigger ones. Birdy thinks we need more leaves so we can stay out there in the rain, but I'm not sure we can find trees with leaves that big. I think it turned out so cute. I'm not sure what my husband will say when he gets home, but I think it is just as sound as the one we saw on Man Woman Wild a few weeks ago!

  3. Oh that is just fantastic! I've been wanting to make a teepee style playhouse for the new garden when we move but not sure how. I'm so impressed that you just up and did it! Did you tie the tops together somehow?

No, I didn't tie them together. Birdy helped hold one up while I placed the other two. Two of the big branches had little forks at the top so they all kind of entwined themselves and then the weight of the branches pushed in on each other to hold themselves up. It is actually very sturdy. I went and pushed on it and tugged at it before I would let the kids play in it. I couldn't get it to budge. I'm glad you liked it. And thanks for re-tweeting!

  15. Oh this is so wonderful! How I wish we could have one of those in our back yard. Last year, someone made one in a wooded area of a park near our home. There were more kids playing in that than there were on the actual playground equipment in the park. Tells you something, doesn't it?
Wishing you and your kiddos many hours of imaginative and creative play in your tee pee.
